Fourth Grade
Mrs. Beth Murray, Teacher
Welcome to fourth grade at SGES!! Fourth grade is a wonderful time to broaden math skills, to expand critical thinking and reasoning concepts, investigate new ideas in science, and to continue developing writing mechanics and literature interpretation. Fourth grade is involved hands-on in all core subjects, and participates in chapel, PE, art, music, Spanish, and technology.
Curriculum
Math - Mathematics coursework includes the mastery of multiplication and division and detailed work with fractions, decimals, geometry, and problem solving. Late in the year, students will study pre-algebra, balance equations, and solve for unknown values. Math resources include text books and Accelerated Math.
Reading / Language Arts - Students continue to read independently and are directed to quality literature. Reading skills such as vocabulary enrichment, comprehension, inference, etc. are developed through various approaches. The following is a list of fourth grade literature selections covered this year:
Science - Discovery through experimentation is our approach with the Britannica FOSS kits and the GALAXY science programs. Through archaeological midden digs, discovering "Oobleck", chemical reaction labs, participation in the "Great Egg Drop" and numerous other hands-on laboratories, fourth graders will study patterns in science, matter and energy, inventions, human body, and water. Science offers a unique opportunity to open the eyes of a child to the love of discovery and insight.
Social Studies - Fourth grade students travel to Africa, Europe, South America, Asia, North America, and Australia. Our social studies theme is "World Tour", and we use many resources to gather knowledge of our world. Students will prepare written and oral reports on some of the countries we visit, and they will be responsible for a large vocabulary of geography terms. While visiting each country students will "experience the country" through art, music, and tasting the native cuisine. Sometimes our travel information will be enhanced by visits from world travelers or natives willing to share their experiences.
