Music Curriculum Overview
At St. George's, students engage in a comprehensive music education, cultivating their musical abilities from PK3 through middle school. The music program fosters creativity, technical skills, and an appreciation for diverse musical traditions, allowing students to explore and develop their musical passions.
Early Childhood (PK3-2) In Early Childhood, students begin their musical journey with an emphasis on creative expression and foundational skills. Through movement, voice, and instruments, they:
- Respond to music using body movement and vocalization.
- Establish and maintain a steady beat.
- Explore differences in pitch, tempo, and dynamics.
- Use instruments and voice to experiment with musical sounds.
- Perform songs and chants expressively.
These general music classes lay the groundwork for further musical development.
Lower School (Grades 3-5) Lower School students expand upon their early musical experiences by diving deeper into musical theory and performance. In this stage, students:
- Appreciate and compare a variety of musical genres.
- Identify the characteristics of orchestral instrument families.
- Learn basic rhythm and pitch patterns through theory and composition exercises.
- Participate in and perform with vocal ensembles.
These experiences enhance their understanding of music’s structure and provide opportunities to perform in group settings.
Middle School (Grades 6-8) Middle School students refine their music reading and performance abilities while exploring the broader context of music in culture and history. They:
- Study the historical significance and performance practice of various musical genres.
- Explore theater arts through the production and performance of a musical.
- Develop proficient music reading skills via theory and composition exercises.
- Participate in vocal solo and ensemble performances.
These courses are designed to help students deepen their musical expertise, leading them toward more advanced artistic achievements.
